10:23 am - Festivids recs!
|
Yeah, I know, it took me THREE WHOLE DAYS to post this. ;-) What can I say, I've been busy. *g*
I got three *full-length* videos this year which, um, wow. And which kinda makes me feel awful because not only did I only finish one, but I finished it late so technically I defaulted. :-( Think I may just pinch hit for a couple of years until I feel I've earned what I already got. :-o
But my gifts are glorious and, deserved or not, *they* deserve to be gushed over, so:
Awake My Soul is an achingly gorgeous tribute to Sarah Jane Smith, using clips from her entire tenure in the Doctor Who universe, EVEN K-9 and Company! And the song, oh, wow. Have tissues handy because you *will* get choked up.
I've Got You Under My Skin. The Shadow (movie)! Margo/Lamont! And it's *exactly* what I asked for--a modern cover of a 30s-ish song. Best of all, this particular cover really brings out the creepy undertones of the song, which fits SO well with the darker undertones of Lamont's character. :-)
And then Real Live Girl is a "Slipper and the Rose" video!!! Incredibly sweet song and beautifully edited--I love this movie sooooooo much and this is a wonderful compliment to it! :-)
Now for some of my favorites made for other people. *g* ( 2 Broke Girls, The Bionic Woman, Bringing Up Baby, Clueless, ET, Jeeves & Wooster, Mythbusters, Quantum Leap, Revenge )
So. Anyway. These are my favorites, but I really haven't watched any videos made for this year's challenge that aren't good, so here, check out the masterlist while you're at it. :-D

Would anyone be interested in a DVD commentary on "Moments of Revelation"? Because I'm kinda half in the mood to write one...
(Not right this second--right now I need to go to bed--but maybe this weekend?)

12:27 pm - Yuletide recs!
|
Okay, so I am only NOW getting a chance to really sit down and go through the archive, having just gotten back from three days with family. I did manage to sneak away to read my stories, however, so I'll start with them. I got two stories in the main collection and one Madness, and I am so excited about them!
Happy to Be Near You (The Playboy Club) gives me much desired backstory for Alice and Sean Beasley. And OMG SOMEONE WROTE ME CARTER FIC! (Person of Interest) TWO someones, in fact! The More I Find, the Less I Know is the *perfect* Carter-POV tag for episode 1.10, "Number Crunch," and Points of Departure gives great backstory for Carter, Reese *and* Finch. :-)
Now to dive back in and find more recs. This post is officially a work in progress (though you'll all get to see the results at once *g*).
( Back to the Future, Bernice Summerfield (Big Finish Audio), Eureka, Galaxy Quest, How I Met Your Mother, Lord Peter Wimsey/Doctor Who, Oxford Time Travel Universe, Person of Interest, Scarecrow and Mrs. King, Tintin/The Chronicles of Narnia, The Tough Guide to Fantasyland )
Okay, that's it. There may be more if I make a second pass when I'm awake enough to want to brave a few more fandoms. :-)
ETA: If anyone wants to try to guess my stories, well...I wrote two this year (first time I've EVER managed more than one!). Both of them are in fandoms I've never written before and said fandoms have two things in common: one is human, the other is thematic. Obviously I won't confirm or deny guesses until after the reveal (and certain people who know who they are are banned from guessing by reason of insider information ;-) ).

7:30 pm - fandom_stocking
|
I know I haven't been as active here or in fandom in general lately, but fandom_stocking is one of my favorite parts of this time of year so I had to take a moment to pimp it. :-) In spite of the name, it's non-sectarian: you don't even have to celebrate a winter holiday of any kind to submit a wishlist.
So, if you haven't signed up already and want to, you can do so here, and if by chance you wanted to drop a gift in my stocking, it's here. :-)

3:36 pm - Yep, it's started already
|
*sigh* So, I probably should've known better than to read the reaction post for Thursday's episode of Person of Interest on the main PoI fanfic community, considering the fic in said community is already 90% Finch/Reese slash. Big surprise, most of them hated it. ( cut for rage-inducing and possible mild spoilers )
Because heaven forbid the only female lead (who also happens to be the only non-white lead) of the series be allowed to shine. Or have flaws. Or a life. Or a FIRST NAME.
Screw this. I'm not going to allow yet another fandom I'm in to degenerate into a place where people who care about something other than the two white male leads screwing each other are afraid to have a voice, or have their voices drowned out. So, I'm going to create my own PoI community. I just need a little help deciding how specific to make it. So, poll:

...snagged from a lot of people but primarily dragonsinger because that's how long ago I started writing this post. Um, yeah. *g*
1. Think of up to 20 ships you support. 2. List them using descriptions of the characters involved rather than their names. 3. Have your f-list guess as many of the ships as they can. 4. Fandom hints will be given if asked in the comments.

7:51 pm - Dear Yuletide Author
|
Dear Yuletide Author,
First of all, whoever you are, THANK YOU. Nothing makes my day more than receiving something created just for me, and when that something is in a fandom I love that I don't often see, it makes my whole year. So just by being you, you have already made me a very happy fangirl. Which means that, even though there will be a LOT of words and a LOT of details in this letter, please don't let that intimidate you! I will be happy with just about anything you write for me, but firmly believe it's better to provide too much information than too little.
( General Information )
Okay, now on to the fandoms! *g*
( The Adventures of Holly Hobbie - Richard Dubelman )
( The Playboy Club )
( Scarecrow and Mrs. King )
( Person of Interest (TV) )
Okay, that's it! I hope this has been helpful, but once again let me reiterate that there is very little you could do to make me unhappy with the story you're going to write for me, so please feel free to go wherever the muse leads you. The important thing is that you have as much fun writing it as I'm going to have reading it, and thank you again in advance for your time and creative energy. Can't wait to see the result!

9:29 pm - Dear Festividder
|
(I am going to have SO much fun with my festivids assignment! *rubs hands in glee*
That said, sorry for doing this so late but hopefully I'm not TOO late to help make my festividder's job a little easier. :-) )
Dear Festividder,
First off, fanvids are one of the fannish gifts I most love to receive so no matter what you are inspired to do, let me say right now that I love you for doing it! Second, while I will include a lot of detail in this letter because I find specifics can only help, my tastes are both very broad and pretty flexible, so don't worry if you can't make a video exactly to my specifications. Music suggestions are just that: suggestions. Go where your muse leads you. Chances are I will love it regardless. :-D
( General likes and dislikes )
( Scarecrow and Mrs. King )
( Babylon 5 )
( The Shadow 1994 )
( Doctor Who 1963-1989/Sarah Jane Adventures )
( Quantum Leap )
( National Treasure )
( The Slipper and the Rose )

Making two womenlovefest posts today because I forgot yesterday. Oops.
It wasn't easy to decide what to say about Saavik, the subject of this one. I thought about writing another meta waxing poetic on why the character is awesome, but that's already been done--and done briliantly--by somebody else. So instead, I'm just going to provide resources for people who want to discover her awesomeness for themselves.
First, though, a little background:
( my history with Saavik )
( the books )
Well, there you have it. My three favorite licensed tie-ins featuring Saavik. Hope you enjoy them as much as I have. :-)

8:30 pm - Strength Without Fighting - WLTWTFH Day #1
|
Okay, so I didn't officially sign up for womenlovefest because by the time I decided if I had the time to do it, they'd already thrown up their hands and said, "Too many people, do what you want!" But I still want to try to do something for it. So, since I didn't claim a character (or several) I'm planning to post about a different awesome female character each day this week. Starting with this one:
( Elizabeth Weir )
In a nutshell, Elizabeth Weir meant a lot to me, as a fan and as a person, because she was someone I could aspire to be like without sacrificing *my* principles. You can't put a price on that.

12:20 pm - anything I title this just seems trite and trivializing :-(
|
I don't tend to watch the news. In fact, I actively avoid doing so most of the time because it makes me feel angry and helpless and I don't like those feelings, especially when there are some days it's enough of a battle to get up and go on with my day just dealing with my own issues. I know that's selfish, but it's self-preservation too.
But every now and then something comes along that makes the news that I can't and *won't* ignore.
I'm sure most of you who live in San Diego and probably a lot of you here in Southern California have heard by now on the news about this horrific story. (Warning: potential triggers for domestic violence and...I don't even know what else.)
( brief summary for those who can't/don't want to follow the link - cut for same potential triggers )
Hooley's Irish Pub, in Rancho San Diego (right next door to the Edwards theater on Jamacha), is collecting donations of money, clothes, etc. for Alyssa tonight. I don't know what time the fundraiser starts, but if you're in San Diego and want to help, I'm sure you can call them (619-670-PINT) and get the info. :-(
I'll admit, to my shame, that I only heard about this because this family was very dear to some friends of my family, but that's not why I'm angry. It would be easy to trot out all the usual platitudes about needing to end domestic violence, but I'm going out on a limb and saying that's not good enough. I think we, as a species, need to reject the concept of revenge. Because as long as we glamorize it, as long as we glorify it and justify it and excuse it, we will continue to produce people who think that doing something like this is okay. That their anger or hurt or embarrassment or WHATEVER justifies murder and destruction on this scale, or any scale.
It's not okay. It's never been okay, but I don't think it's ever going to stop happening until the human race as a whole stands up and says that with one voice.
(Yeah. Like that's ever going to happen. :-( )

10:11 pm - beta reader?
|
Okay, so I actually wrote this a few months ago but I've been sitting on it for a while because I'm debating whether or not to completely rewrite the second half of the story.
The story is the second in my Nine and Charley series, and it's an AU of "Dalek." I did have a beta volunteer, but she's been swamped lately and I figure it's not fair for me to leave it hanging over her head when she's got more important stuff on her plate. *HUG*
So...anyone? I need someone who will tell me honestly if the erm, resolution of the conflict is too a) convoluted or b) boring.

2:26 pm - Kickstart the muses
|
Okay, so the past few months have been insanely busy for me. I've been working two jobs and occasionally having a social life. But the result is, I haven't had the time or energy to do ANY writing and that bothers me. :-( Especially since I've got the au_bigbang due in a couple of months and I have maybe 1K on it. And a charity story that is probably at least a year overdue. :-\
So. Since Memorial Day coming up means I'll have two days off for the first time in *ages* that aren't already committed to travel, I'm hoping to get some writing time in at least one day. But since my muses are so out of practice that I think it'll take more than just "Hey, we have a Big Bang to write," to wake them up, I'm taking drabble prompts. Give me two characters (who can be but don't have to be from the same fandom) and some sort of prompt. A word, a phrase, a line from a song, whatever. (Only thing is I don't guarantee a particular *type* of relationship between the characters: I'll write any pair, but not any pairing if that makes sense. *g*)
I make no promises. I'm an inconsistent drabbler at the best of times (and right now would not qualify as the best of times), but I will do my best to fulfill as many prompts as I can.
The fandoms I'm willing to try to tackle right now are (but if you want a fandom/crossover that's not on this list, ask me before prompting and I might OK it):
Babylon 5 Castle The Chronicles of Narnia Doctor Who (nuWho and any classic/Big Finish era I know) The Dragonriders of Pern** Fringe Mysterious Ways Quantum Leap Scarecrow and Mrs. King Sherlock
**ONLY as a fusion--I don't feel comfortable writing the canon characters, but I can write characters from another universe into this one. (IE: "Sherlock, Sherlock Holmes, John Watson, dragonriders" or something like that.)

11:20 am - No one's ever going to forget you
|
Been reeling for the past couple of days at the news of Lis Sladen's untimely demise. It still doesn't seem real, especially so soon after losing Nick Courtney. As I said to a friend, the Doctor lost his two best friends this year. :-( And we as fans lost the two people who had always been there to tie the different eras of the show together and remind us that yes, this really is the same wonderful journey that we boarded one or two or ten Doctors ago. No one will ever be able to take their place. :-(
God bless you, Nick and Lis. May the next part of your journey, wherever it leads you, be as wonderful as if not moreso than the adventures you made us believe in. :-(

12:50 pm - Checking in
|
Just wanted to touch base with my friends along the Pacific coast, no matter what side of it you're on. We're expected to escape the worst of the tsunami damage here (plus I'm far enough inland that it probably won't affect me at all), but I know Northern California, Oregon and Hawaii have been hit harder. Not sure if I know anyone in Japan (although anyone who has family or friends there: they okay? :-\ ) and I haven't heard anything about how it's going to affect Korea, but it can't be good, since they're a lot closer to Japan than Hawaii is. :-(
So if anyone wants to drop a status report in the comments, t'would be much appreciated.
(The really scary thing is, with the number and severity of the earthquakes we've been having in the past few years, it almost makes you wonder if the people predicting the world is going to end in 2012 aren't as crazy as previously thought... :-\ )

7:51 pm - Festivids!!
|
Festivids is live! The master list is here if anyone wants to browse.
I got three videos this year: THREE!
Two were of the movie Clue and I honestly can't decide which one I like better! They both were EXACTLY what I asked for, which is crazy, slapstick fun just like the movie. :-)
Another One Bites the Dust (Yep, the Queen song!) But Here's What Really Happened to the delightful Yakkity Sax
And then some generous soul made me a delightful Eighth Doctor video! Appropriately entitled New Shoes. *grin*
All of the videos are so incredibly well done this year - at least of the ones I watched - that it's genuinely hard to make a recs list! I'm tempted to just rec them all, so that's more or less what I'm going to do: here, have the link again.
But aside from my awesome gifts (EEE!) there is one I just HAVE to mention: someone did a CHiPs video to "Life is a Highway" (and yes, donna_c_punk, it's the original version *g*). CHiPs. To "Life is a Highway." DO I REALLY NEED TO SAY MORE?
Also, if anyone wants to try to guess which video I made, go right ahead. I may even make a little something for the first person to guess correctly. Whom I will identify after the reveals, of course. ;-)

6:32 pm - Yuletide reveal
|
Happy New Year, everyone!
Well, now that it's official, I can admit that I wrote Yes, Declan, There Is a Santa Claus for mumblemutter for Yuletide this year.
I didn't give any hints for anyone to guess because, well, even after Yuletide, it is still true that right now every single piece of Mysterious Ways fanfic on the AO3 is by me. *glares at debc and medie and anyone else I know that wrote it back in the day*
Ah well. Regardless, I had a lot of fun writing the story. It was really nice to go back and revisit the series and remind myself of all the reasons I loved it so much. In fact, it's been really hard, as I've been rewatching it, not to share my thoughts on the episodes and the show in general, but I figured that would REALLY give it away! *g* (I'm having the same problem, to a lesser degree, with my festivids fandom. Which reminds me, gotta finish that this weekend! :-o )
